Foam dough is light and soft, and you can mold it a little. It has just two ingredients: shaving cream and cornstarch, in a 2 to 1 ratio. Since it has no preservatives, make it right when you’re ready to play.
Ingredients
- 2 cups (480 ml) shaving cream (foam from a can, not gel)
- 1 cup (240 ml) cornstarch
- Food coloring and glitter (optional)
Supplies: a mixing bowl.
Steps
- Put the shaving cream in the bowl.
- Add the food coloring.
- Add the cornstarch and stir with a spoon, then mix by hand.
- Too soft: a pinch of cornstarch; too dry: a little shaving cream.
How do you know it worked?
Foam dough is ready when it’s light and airy, holds together in a ball when you squeeze it and roughly keeps the shape you give it. It may leave a little powder on your hands: that’s normal. If it slumps or sticks, add a pinch of cornstarch; if it crumbles and won’t hold together, add a little shaving cream. Mix by hand for two or three minutes before adjusting, because the texture changes a lot during that time. It doesn’t keep: make it right before playtime.
The most common slime fails
- It’s sticky
- A pinch of cornstarch.
- It crumbles
- A little shaving cream.
Variations and ideas
- With glue and an activator, shaving cream makes fluffy slime.
How to store it
It dries out fast: make it the same day. A closed container keeps it for a few hours.
